Joys of Being a Parent

Parenthood is a great joy to many but there are some things people neglect to tell you before having a child that may be helpful to know. It helps to be prepared when the new baby makes his or her arrival.

The first thing, is that when you're baby arrives it is likely to look a little strange. Babies can often be born looking a little blue or gray in color and their heads may be temporarily misshapen from the stresses of labor. Newborns commonly have a wizened look of senior citizens.

Often babies arrive bloody and bruised from childbirth. Some have body hair, some don't. It can be startling for parents if they are not expecting it. It's natural, however, and not permanent.

Don't be too concerned, though, if that's the case with your baby. Under most circumstances, newborns quickly pink up and gain weight. Their heads heal and in just a few days or weeks they become the healthy, chubby babies most parents picture having.

Be prepared for that process to take a few weeks, however. Your baby needs time to recover from the trauma of being born.

After that period passes, it's important to decide whether to breast feed your baby or use formula. Breast feeding has long been recommended as the best source of nourishment for your baby. It's natural and contains everything your baby needs.

Breast feeding naturally contains all the nutrients and vitamins a baby needs. It is a better alternative than formula which has to be added to water, which can contain chemicals unnecessary or even harmful to your baby.

Babies also benefit from the closeness that breastfeeding provides. The touch of their mother's skin can be calming and help with the bonding process. It will help them grow and develop in a nurturing situation.
